Saturday in Hyeres
Hello Everyone,
Today, Saturday, was another beautiful day in Hyeres Port. It was sunny and warm, however the wind picks up quickly and is cold. I find myself putting on and taking off layers, depending on the breeze. We got out for a nice sail in 15 to 17 knots of breeze. It took uas some time to 'get in the groove' but we did and had a great practice. John has some issues with his seat so we quit a bit early to work on those. John and Steve wrangled Tim from the Aussie team and JP from the American team to help them fix John's seat. There are mechanical and electical pieces to the puzzle so it was nice to have some help from our friends.
We had our opening ceremony this evening. My highschool french is not taking me too far so most of the speeches were lost on me. However it was fun to spend some social time with all the sailors that we've gotten to know across the world.
Tommorrow the winds are predicted to be 20 knots or so. That is a bit much for our Skud fleet but we'll see.
Bon Soire Mon Amies!

Too Windy to Sail
Hi Everyone,
Friday we were to splasht the boat and go out for a practice sail. It was sunny and beatiful but the famous Mistral winds were blowing and building by the hour. Several of the SKUD teams were rigging to head out from the dock. Spain left the harbor but soon came back with a broken mast. After seeing this and checking wind strength, the teams on the dock de-rigged and went home. We were told by the crane operator to that it was too windy to lauch our boat. Therefore, we (mostly Steve) contiuned on with boat maintenance, lunch, etc. We did manage to navigate the bus system and headed into old town Hyeres for some sightseeing and dinner.
This morning, Saturday the winds are much more calm so it should be a good day for practice. Opening ceremonies are this evening and racing starts tomorrow.

Day 2 - Wednesday
We had challenging conditions with winds ranging from 5 to 20 knots. We had great starts and good speed but had some issues with the strong winds on the reach that lost us several points. Our results were 6th, 4th and 6th with the Americans (Jen and JP), GBR, and Australians in taking the lead spots. We feel confident we can make improvements and are looking forward to the rest of the event.
